The people’s deputy of Ukraine, the Commissioner on Crimean Tatar Affairs Mustafa Dzhemilev proposes to deprive the city of Sevastopol of the special status. He suggested that in the letter to the President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko that was published on his Facebook page.
Dzhemilev came to this conclusion in the light of the events related to the occupation of Crimea in 2014.
“It is advisable to abolish the special status of Sevastopol and include the city as a part of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Analysis of events and reasons that led to the temporary occupation of the Crimean peninsula gives grounds to assert that the special status of Sevastopol played an important role in the annexation. Granting the special status to Sevastopol even in case of cancellation of renting for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation will re-create conditions for spreading of centrifugal forces in the city,” the leader of the Crimean Tatar people says.
As a reminder, according to Mustafa Dzhemilev, the draft law on the status of the Crimean Tatar people will go to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for consideration in the middle of July.
