If the North Crimean Channel isn’t used for a year or two, it will not be possible to restore it. A participant of the channel construction Nikolay Karnaukh stated that in a comment to the agency e-Krym.
“The channel is perishing now. It will be very hard to restore it, if it is possible at all. If it is not used, it goes out of service. Sure, it has worn out for 50 years of service, but after interruption of the Dnieper River water supply it may never function properly,” he thinks.
Nikolay Karnaukh emphasized that drainage and irrigation systems of the channel should be used in any accessible way.
Crimea received up to 85% of fresh water through the North Crimean Channel. Water supplies to Crimea have been stopped after annexation of Crimea.
As a reminder, in Crimea they still hope that water supplies through the North Crimean Channel are going to be restored.
