The Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov thinks that the current leadership of Ukraine committed coup d’etat and lost its right to claim the return of Crimea to the Ukrainian state. Novosti Kryma reports about that.
According to the head of the Foreign Service, the regime change that took place in Ukraine ruined “the right of the Ukrainian state to claim the territory that held a referendum, during which the great majority of population raised their voice for independence and further accession to the Russian Federation, according to the decision of the elected prior to coup parliament and in full conformity with international law.”
The minister also emphasized that the issue of Crimea was resolved in compliance with a key principle of the UN Charter – the right of nations to self-determination. “As the UN General Assembly explained in 1970, the principle of the territorial integrity should be respected in regard to those countries, which guarantee the right of nations living in that country to self-determination on their territory, respect this right and don’t use violence to prevent the realization of this right,” Sergey Lavrov explained.
