The prosecutor’s office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea conducts the pre-trial investigation into the genocide of Crimean Tatar people and the Ukrainian law provides for the maximum punishment for that.
The deputy prosecutor of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Petr Kovalenko said that at a press conference arranged to coincide with the Remembrance Day of the victims of genocide of the Crimean Tatar people, the Pod Pritselom correspondent informs.
“Ukrainian prosecuting authorities don’t steer clear of these problems. In particular, the prosecutor’s office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea initiated and conducted the pre-trial investigation inеo the criminal proceedings for the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people. Article “Genocide” is Article 442 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine that provides for a sentence of life imprisonment. Moreover, there is no limitation period for this Article,” Kovalenko said.
On November 12, 2015, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 as the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people.
